Finding vacation employment

As an undergraduate engineer at UWA, you are required to complete a minimum of 12 weeks of vacation employment as a compulsory part of your course (minimum 16 weeks for BE/BCompSci students).

Without a satisfactory level of experience you will be unable to graduate and will not be eligible for registration with Engineers Australia.

Engineers Australia requires that students total at least 12 weeks of relevant practical experience during their engineering courses. This will normally be obtained through paid employment during vacations. Practical experience should complement the formal studies of the course and ideally should contain several different types of experience.

The faculty has a website dedicated to information on Professional Practicum (or vacation employment). Professional Practicum

Why is vacation employment useful to you?
Employers are commonly using vacation employment as a recruitment tool for their graduate intake. You should diligently apply for vacation employment as it were a real job – because it actually is.

Take advantage of all of the networking opportunities and ways to gain experience. Don’t forget that you will need to submit a professional practicum report. Most vacation work recruitment begins at the beginning of the second semester (around August and September).

IEEE Student Networking Forum
One of our primary aims is to keep students informed about the work place, as well as to help develop extremely important career searching skills. That's why we host our Student Networking Forum (in co-operation with the Curtin IEEE Student Branch) annually.

The Student Networking Forum allows students to interact at a personal level with representatives from top Engineering firms. Whether you are looking for Vacation Work or just want to learn more about the industry, the Networking Forum is a great way to learn more about your profession!

For more information, see Student Networking Forum.
