Matthew Leigh, OBEL - Talk on
Airway Imaging
Tuesday 28th of May
2007
1pm,
Blakers Lecture Theatre
Find out more about the progress currently being made
in the tools for researching sleep apnoea. See the abstract (summary)
below for more information.
ABSTRACT:
You almost certainly know someone who has sleep apnoea - but they may
not know it themselves. Sleep apnoea, like many other airway disorders,
is a condition that is under-diagnosed and poorly understood. One of the
reasons that the causes of sleep apnoea aren't definitively known is
that until now, there has been no way of measuring the size and shape of
a person's airway while they sleep. A research project within the
Department of Electrical & Electronic Engineering at UWA has been
working on this problem, and they have built an instrument capable of
doing so. The talk will cover the design and construction of the
instrument and some of the world-first results generated so far.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Mr Leigh is currently a PhD student with the Optical + Biomedical
Engineering Laboratory, under the supervision of Prof. David D. Sampson.
He joined the Department of Electrical & Electronic Engineering as a
Research Associate in 2002, and began his PhD in 2003. He received the
Bachelor of Technology (Hons) in Optoelectronics from the University of
Auckland in 2001.
