The current job
market
The job market varies from year to
year. Currently Western Australia and Queensland are in the resources
boom stage.
This is good news for
graduates who have majored in Power, Instrumentation and Control
engineering as these skills are high demand by many engineering
companies. All other areas such as Computer Science, IT, Computer
Engineering, Software, Mechatronics engineering should also be able to
find employment in their field. The positions may be based in the
metropolitan area or in the country area if in Western Australia.
Most companies begin recruiting for graduates for the following year in
March/April.
You should consider factors such as:
- Working conditions: do they suit your lifestyle needs? Can you
cope with the working environment? Are you likely to enjoy the type of
work on offer?
- Remuneration: Is there sufficient pay, compensation to support
your cost of living and does it adequately reward your efforts?
- Advancement opportunities: Will there be an allowance to attain
further qualifications in future? How do graduates normally progress
through the company?
- Graduate development program: Most graduate development
programs support the attainment of the Engineer’s Australia Chartered
Professional Engineer status.
