Arrival of the Nomad UWA Sustainable Accommodation Test Facility
On Tuesday the 5th of June the School of EECE took delivery of the Nomad UWA Sustainable Accommodation Test Facility as part of the Schools IDEAL House project. The two-room donga has been donated to UWA by NOMAD to establish a prototype IDEAL House. It is located in car park 14 (along Fairway entrance 4 access road).
The Intelligently Designed Engineering for Advanced Living (IDEAL) House is a large multi-disciplinary endeavor being launched by the School of EE&CE to provide students (and staff) with the opportunity to contribute to the future of human habitation on this planet. While this initiative can be broadly divided into the two major areas of sustainability and automation, it is meant to be inclusive of all aspects where electrical, electronic, and/or computing technologies can contribute to human well-being within a habitat. There could be many aspects to this type of house, including energy production, energy efficiency, automated control of appliances, leisure and entertainment, comfort and safety, as well as providing the basic needs of food, water and shelter in clever and sustainable ways. It is intended that the IDEAL House will expand to include any applicable technology desired by the participants in the project.
Nomad provided an installer and a crane as well as escorted transporting the test facility from their yard in Henderson to UWA. Once the facility arrived, concrete blocks were placed and leveled. The spreader bar on the crane was not as wide as the donga and wooden blocks were required to protect the overhanging sheeting at the rear of the facility. Once placed on the foundations, the facility was moved to its final position using a standard truck jack. The donga weighs 6.1 tones.
