ABSTRACT:
The use of femtosecond lasers has now become widespread in a range of sectors ranging from high energy amplified systems for micro-machining to ultra-precise cuts in laser eye surgery. Most systems in use today rely on the well proven Ti:Sapphire system that was first developed at St Andrews almost 20 years ago. This talk will review our recent progress in the design and construction of "next generation" femtosecond lasers. I will show how we have used these laser systems for high capacity data transmission and proof of principal experiments in optical switching and optical A-to-D conversion.
