Bend loss in fibres has been investigated extensively both experimentally and theoretically following the fabrication of the first single-mode fibres in the late 1960’s. Although various theoretical models have been developed since to try and explain the experimental measurements, they are rather ad hoc and provide little physical insight into light propagation in real fibres.
